Broward County Airboat Halftrack and Conservation Club has lost one of our members. He was a Firefighter for Pompano Beach Fire Department and was killed as a result of a fall during a training exercise. His name is Bill Elliot and was a member at the Never Rest Camp in Area 2A. You may remember him and his Dog named Dinghy riding his airboat. He was always there when you needed help. We will miss him. Rest in Peace Billy.

Memorial Dedication was held on October 8th, 2011 for Don "Pops" Kirk

1st Annual Tim "Bravo1218" Herburger Crab Trap Cleanup
It was the second derelict crab trap removal event for Broward County Airboat, Halftrack & Conservation Club on July 10th, 2011. The first one was on July 10th, 2009 in which the members and their airboats along with some skiff type boats, removed 621 derelict crab traps.
The club decided to call this 2nd event the "1st Annual Tim "Bravo1218" Herburger Crab Trap Cleanup" in honor of Tim, who passed away this past year. Two of Tim's three kids attended the event - Alison & Sean. Tom, "T-REX" on Southern Airboat, brought his airboat so the Herburger family & their friends Matt & Sarah could also participate in the event. The event started shortly after 7:00 a.m. from the boat ramp at Alabama Jack's on Card Sound Road in Key Largo, FL. Keith Price, President of the Airboat Association of Florida, also brought a crew from his club. Tim was also a member of their club.
After a brief instruction on the event from the Miami-Dade DERM Coastal Resources Supervisor John Ricisak to the approximately 40 volunteers, all boats were given a reporting sheet and a permit to remove the traps for the day. Then the HUNT was on! Some went to the south of the boat ramp and others went to the north. It was a completely different scenrio, then two years ago, as we rounded the corner out of the canal to the areas we would be looking for traps, there was a lack of buoys floating around. We really had to look for them submerged in the water.
We all met back at the boat ramp around noonish. Hamburgers and Hotdogs with water and chips were provided by the club to the volunteers. The count was 207 traps that were brought in, exactly 1/3 of the previous cleanup. The traps were completely smashed and put in a large dumpster. The Broward club presented Tim's kids with plaques so they would take home a momento of the event.

The Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission came into existence on July 1, 1999 - the result of a constitutional amendment approved in the 1998 General Election as part of the package proposed by the Constitution Revision Commission.
In the implementation of the Constitutional Amendment, the Florida Legislature combined all of the staff and Commissioners of the former Marine Fisheries Commission, elements of the Divisions of Marine Resources and Law Enforcement of the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, and all of the employees and Commissioners of the former Game and Fresh Water Fish Commission.
Five years later, after consulting stakeholders, employees and other interested parties, the FWC adopted a new internal structure to address complex conservation issues of the new century. The new structure focuses on programs, such as habitat management, that affect numerous species. It will focus on moving the decision-making process closer to the public and did not require any additional funding or additional positions.
